Keep Mailgun. Keep the record longer than its logs.
Mailgun is a developer-friendly provider with a real SLA. What it keeps for you is short, and a disabled domain stops everything behind it.
People looking for a Mailgun alternative usually aren't unhappy with how it sends. They're unhappy the week a domain was disabled, or the day support asked about an email the logs had already forgotten. Moving to another single provider keeps both problems.
Mailway leaves Mailgun sending and adds the two things it doesn't do: a second provider behind it, and a record that outlives the logs. Here is what that changes, and when it changes nothing.
A developer's provider with a real SLA.
A financially backed SLA
Mailgun commits to 99.99% availability for its API, SMTP and outbound delivery, with service credits.
EU data residency
US and EU regions under one account, with message data kept in the region that processed it.
Raw-message sending
SMTP on ports 25, 465, 587 and 2525, and an API that accepts the complete MIME message, so your bytes arrive as sent.
Durable suppressions
Bounce, complaint and unsubscribe lists are kept indefinitely.
What Mailgun keeps, and what it stops.
A day, or five, of logs
Log retention is 1 day on Free and Basic, 5 days on Foundation and 30 on Scale. Message content is kept for 1 day on Foundation and up to 7 on Scale; none is listed for Free or Basic.
source: Mailgun pricingEvery message is archived byte-for-byte, next to a timeline of every attempt, searchable by sender, recipient, subject, and state for as long as your plan keeps it (retention).
A disabled domain stops everything behind it
Mailgun temporarily disables domains that exceed bounce or spam thresholds it doesn't publish, and can hold new accounts to an hourly sending limit until they're verified.
source: Mailgun: why was my domain disabledWhen Mailgun refuses a message, the retry goes to the next provider in your chain five seconds later. Failover needs two providers, so it's available on Pro and up. It buys time, not forgiveness: a list problem follows you to the next provider, which is why reported bounces and complaints feed a suppression list checked before any provider.
Suppressions live per domain and region
Mailgun organizes suppressions per domain, and a domain's data stays in its region.
source: Mailgun suppressionsReported bounces and complaints land on one list per project, checked on every send whichever provider or domain carries it. (Mailgun's own lists keep working alongside.)
- Your Mailgun account, region, pricing, IPs and domain setup.
- DKIM signing stays at Mailgun. Mailway hands over the raw message through Mailgun's MIME API or SMTP, byte-for-byte.
- Opens and clicks stay in Mailgun. Mailway reads Mailgun's delivery events (delivered, permanent and temporary failures, complaints), never engagement: tracking opens means rewriting your message, and Mailway relays it unchanged.
If a day or five of logs has always been enough, a disabled domain has never cost you a day of mail, and Mailgun alone covers your volume, then Mailgun on its own is the right answer, and a layer in front of it would be complexity you don't need.
Keep Mailgun; change one config block.
Add your Mailgun domain to Mailway (API key or SMTP credentials, US or EU), add a second provider behind it, and point your mailer at smtp.mailway.net with a Mailway SMTP credential (quickstart).
Point Mailgun's webhooks at the URL Mailway generates for the provider and store Mailgun's webhook signing key in Mailway: deliveries, failures, and complaints land on each message's timeline, every event's signature checked (Mailgun setup). Until then, Mailgun sends read accepted, never delivered.
If you ever move away from Mailgun, it's a console change: reorder the chain, and your application never notices.
EU-region domains use smtp.eu.mailgun.org.
