Mailway's pricing has one unusual property: delivery isn't in it. You bring your own provider accounts (BYOK) and pay providers directly at their prices — Mailway charges for the gateway, the archive, and the tooling, never a per-email margin. The plan price on the card is the whole Mailway bill.

Every tier is priced by monthly routing volume and retention window, from Free at 1,000 emails a month to Enterprise with unlimited retention; multi-year retention add-ons cover SOX, HIPAA, and FINRA record-keeping (plan details). Questions, answered

What does BYOK (Bring Your Own Key) mean?
You plug in your own API keys for email providers like Amazon SES, SendGrid, or Mailgun. Mailway routes emails through your accounts, not ours. You keep full control of your sender reputation, domain configuration, and provider costs — and Mailway has zero conflict of interest on which provider you use.
Do I need to change my application code?
For SMTP, no — just update your host, port, and credentials. Works with every language and framework. We also offer a REST API with live and sandbox keys for teams that prefer sending via HTTP. Either way, no proprietary SDK required.
What happens when a provider goes down?
Mailway classifies the error. If it's a temporary failure (timeout, rate limit, server error), it automatically routes the email through your next configured provider. If it's permanent (invalid recipient), it stops, logs the result, and suppresses the address. Your app doesn't handle any of this.
How is Mailway different from SendGrid or SES?
SendGrid and SES are email providers — they deliver emails. Mailway is the layer in front of them. You can use SendGrid and SES simultaneously through Mailway, with automatic failover between them. Mailway doesn't send emails itself; it makes your existing providers more reliable.
Does Mailway track delivery and bounces?
Yes. Mailway ingests delivery events from your provider and shows the real outcome of each message — delivered, bounced, or complained — not just "accepted." Hard bounces and complaints auto-populate per-project suppression lists that are checked on every send. Outbound webhooks can notify your own app with signed, retried events.
Is my email data secure?
All SMTP connections use TLS (STARTTLS on port 587, implicit TLS on 465). Payloads are stored with server-side encryption, and all data is hosted in the EU.
Can I use multiple providers at the same time?
Yes. Each project can have multiple providers with one of four routing strategies: failover (try providers in order), free-first (spend free tiers before paid sends), round-robin (distribute evenly), or random. Failover optimizes for reliability, free-first for cost, round-robin for balance.
How does free-first cut costs?
Configure multiple providers (e.g., SES, Mailgun, Mailtrap) with the free-first strategy, and Mailway fills each provider's free tier before a single paid send — paid rates only kick in once the free capacity is spent. With BYOK you pay each provider directly, and Mailway adds zero per-email cost.
What's the free tier limit?
1,000 emails per month, 250 MB of monthly throughput, 30-day retention, 1 project with 1 sender domain, 1 provider — with the full dashboard, dev sandbox, and API access. You upgrade when you need failover routing, more projects, or longer retention.
How long does Mailway keep my emails?
30 days on Free, 90 days on Pro, 6 months on Team, 1 year on Business, unlimited on Enterprise. Multi-year retention add-ons cover SOX (7 years), HIPAA (6 years), and FINRA (3+ years) record-keeping — far beyond the few days of logs most providers keep.
What about the development sandbox?
Point your dev environment at smtp.mailway.dev — emails are captured and held without delivery to any provider. Inspect them in the dashboard, then discard them — or release one for real delivery, behind a confirmation. Same credentials, same config, just a different hostname.
