SparkPost

You add SparkPost (now part of Bird) to Mailway as Any SMTP server. Mailway signs in to SparkPost’s SMTP server with an API key as the password and hands each mail over.

  • A SparkPost account with your sender domain verified. Deliverability explains what each record proves.
  • A bounce domain at SparkPost, if SPF should align for DMARC. SparkPost always replaces the envelope sender (MAIL FROM) with its own address, and a bounce domain puts that address on your domain.
  • An API key with the Send via SMTP permission, created in SparkPost’s API key settings. The SMTP password is the key itself.
  1. Add the provider.

In the console, open Providers → New provider and pick Any SMTP server. Fill in:

    Field Value
Server smtp.sparkpostmail.com (US) or smtp.eu.sparkpostmail.com (SparkPost EU). Enterprise accounts use the host SparkPost gives them
Port 587 (SparkPost also accepts 2525)
    Encryption STARTTLS
    Username SMTP_Injection
    Password the API key
    TLS verification leave it on

    Secrets are encrypted at rest.

  2. Attach it to a project.

Open the project, attach the provider, and position it in the failover order.

Mailway doesn’t read delivery reports from SparkPost, so the last state a mail can reach is accepted, when SparkPost takes it. Bounces and complaints that SparkPost learns about later don’t reach Mailway, and they aren’t added to the project’s suppression list.

The provider page’s connection check signs in to SparkPost’s SMTP server and closes the connection without sending anything. It tells you if the server, port, encryption, or credentials are wrong.

SparkPost documents these changes to a relayed message: it replaces the envelope sender (see above) and adds headers such as X-MSFBL. With open and click tracking on, it also rewrites links and adds a tracking pixel. SMTP tracking is off by default on standard accounts and on by default on Enterprise accounts, and you can set it account-wide in SparkPost’s SMTP relay settings. Mailway’s own archive always keeps the message as your app sent it.

SparkPost recommends at most 100 messages per SMTP connection. Mailway opens a new connection for each mail, so this limit doesn’t affect you.
